CONNECTING ALUMINUM CONDUCTORS TO MARECHAL® PLUGS AND SOCKET-OUTLETS AND CONNECTORS: WHAT CAN BE DONE SAFELY AND RELIABLY.

Can you wire an aluminium conductor to industrial socket MARECHAL®?

It is entirely possible to wire an aluminium conductor to industrial socket MARECHAL®, provided that specific technical rules and installation best practice are strictly followed.

Why aluminum is increasingly used across industrial applications

Aluminum-core conductors and cables are now widely deployed across many industrial sectors, particularly for high-power installations and distribution networks.

Compared to copper, aluminum provides several clear and measurable advantages:

  • Lower weight
  • Lower raw material cost
  • Strong resistance to atmospheric corrosion

Aluminum vs copper: what really matters in practice

Aluminum offers a better conductivity-to-weight ratio than copper.
At equivalent weight, it can carry more current.
However, a larger conductor cross-section is required to achieve equivalent electrical performance.

The key technical consideration: galvanic corrosion

MARECHAL® devices are equipped with copper terminals and are certified for use with copper-core conductors.

When two dissimilar metals — such as copper and aluminum — are in contact, they are subject to electrochemical degradation known as « galvanic corrosion ».

This phenomenon is well understood and fully manageable in industrial environments when proven installation solutions are applied.

Solution 1 – Direct connection into MARECHAL® terminals

  1. Lightly abrade the surface of the conductor core that will be in contact with the terminal,
  2. Apply an aluminum/copper contact grease to optimize contact resistance and limit galvanic corrosion between the aluminum conductor and copper terminal,
  3. Insert the conductor into the terminal and apply the tightening torque specified in the instruction sheet.

This method enables:

  • Reduced contact resistance
  • Significant reduction of galvanic corrosion risk
  • Long-term mechanical reliability.

Solution 2 – Indirect connection into MARECHAL® terminals via bimetallic lug or ferrule

  1. Select an aluminum/copper “bimetallic” lug or ferrule.
  2. Wire the aluminum conductor into the aluminum section of the lug or ferrule.
  3. Crimp the conductor.
  4. Insert the lug or ferrule into the terminal and apply the tightening torque specified in the instruction sheet.

This is the preferred solution for large conductor cross-sections, helping to minimize temperature rises risks.

Conclusion

When these best practices are applied, MARECHAL® devices can be safely and reliably used with aluminum-core conductors and cables, without compromising connection performance and durability.

DATA CENTER POWER SUPPLY: OPTIMIZE SAFETY, PERFORMANCE AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Behind every data center lies an invisible—but vital—infrastructure

You monitor your servers, your data flows and your ambient temperatures 24/7…

But who monitors your power connections?

Whether you are hosting critical data, ensuring the uptime of online services or supporting the rise of AI, your data center relies on a flawless electrical infrastructure.

Even a single weak point—from transformers to connectors—can trigger a major disruption.

Excessive heat leads to overconsumption. And poor maintenance can result in costly downtime.

MARECHAL ELECTRIC designs high-performance electrical connection solutions to meet these challenges head-on.

With three key objectives:

  • Secure operations – No risk of contact with live parts.
  • Boost your energy efficiency indicator (PUE) – Minimize losses, reduce heat, control costs.
  • Enable maintenance – Safe disconnection, reduced downtime.

Energy losses due to heating: the hidden enemy draining your budget

Up to 40% of a data center’s energy can be consumed by cooling systems1.
One of the root causes? Energy losses due to heating in the electrical installation.
These losses—known as the Joule effect—generate unwanted heat that:

  • increases your cooling load,
  • accelerates component wear,
  • drives up energy costs.

Engineered to reduce losses and extend lifespan

Our industrial connectors are built to fight overheating, with technologies such as:

  • High-performance silver-nickel contacts – Ultra-low resistance.
  • Spring-loaded terminals – No need for re-tightening, compensate for copper deformation due to vibrations.
  • Capability to withstand overloads up to 10 times the nominal current rating – Consistent performance in continuous operation.

A well-powered data center is a fully controlled ecosystem

Still unsure? Here’s why switching makes sense

A skeptic might say: “My current setup works fine. Why change?

Here is why:

  1. Immediate savings – Less loss = less cooling = lower bills.
  2. Improved safety – No access to live parts, even during intervention.
  3. Smarter maintenance – Fast, safe operations, reduced downtime.

Switching to MARECHAL® connectors is not a cost—it is a fast ROI investment.

A strategic choice, backed by global expertise:

  • A proven, globally trusted technology.
  • Compliance with IEC, UL, and international standards.
  • Scalable installation and long-term performance.
