Every application has characteristics that can affect the safety or correct operation of an electrical appliance.<\/p>\n

Known in good engineering practice as ‘external influences’, they fall into one of three categories: construction, application, or environment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Prior knowledge of external influences is essential when selecting the equipment to be installed.<\/p>\n

The IEC\/EN 60529 standard “Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Index)” defines the test conditions, procedures and penalties for qualifying impermeability.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/section>\n\n\n\n

The presence of water is a widespread external environmental influence. The watertightness level is determined by the second digit of the IP Index.<\/p>\n

In addition, installation standards (e.g. NF C 15-100 in France) recommend a minimum IP level for each application.<\/p>\n

The aim of the standard is to establish \u2018template\u2019 environments to which the appliances are most likely to be subjected during transport, storage, installation and use.<\/p>\n

To address concerns on site, the standard may introduce new IP indexes (IPX9 was added in 2013).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n
