APPLICABLE STANDARDS AND DIRECTIVES

EUROPEAN LEGISLATION

Since its creation in 1993, the European Union’s internal market has been a single market in which, in particular, goods can circulate freely between the various countries of the Union. In addition, one of the main objectives of European regulations is to ensure the safety and protection of people and the environment. For this reason, any manufacturer of a product that may present a risk to users must affix the CE mark (short for ‘Conformité Européenne’) to the product before placing it on the domestic market, in accordance with the requirements of the applicable European legislation. For equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, Directive ATEX 2014/34/EU applies. For equipment intended for industrial use, the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) 2014/35/EU applies.
The ATEX and LVD Directives stipulate that equipment must meet the essential safety requirements: “Electrical equipment may be made available on the EU market only if […] it does not […] endanger the health and safety of persons […] or property”. To achieve this, the manufacturer can rely on harmonised European standards (EN standards) which, when applied, give a presumption of conformity of the product with the requirements of the relevant European directive. The manufacturer can then affix the CE mark to the product and place it on the single market of the European Union.
In the event that MARECHAL® equipment is combined with non-MARECHAL® equipment or spare parts, MARECHAL ELECTRIC S.A.S. cannot be held responsible and the marking will be invalidated.
All MARECHAL® products comply with the Low Voltage Directive and are manufactured under an ISO 9001 quality management system. In compliance with the French Labour Code, article R.4226-12, in compliance with the Spanish Royal Decree 842/2002 REBT, ITC- BT-19 and in compliance with the American standard NFPA70E.

Ministerial
decree

of 20/12/2011

Decree on removable electrical appliances and their conditions of installation and use. This decree was published in the Journal Officiel on 27 January 2012. It states: Art. 6 – The connection or disconnection of the two parts of sockets, extension leads and plugs with a rated current of more than 32 amperes must only be possible when they are not under load. All MARECHAL® appliances comply with this decree.

IEC/EN INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS

MARECHAL® appliances comply with the following standards:

  • IEC/EN 60309-1: plug socket-outlets for industrial purposes – part 1: general rules
  • IEC/EN 60309-4: plug socket-outlets for industrial purposes – part 4: socket-outlets and movable socket-outlets with switch, with or without locking device

The breaking capacity of MARECHAL® DECONTACTOR is tested in accordance with:

  • IEC/EN 60947-3: low-voltage switchgear and control gear – part 3: switches, disconnectors, switch-disconnectors and fuse-combination units. Some MARECHAL® appliances refer to the standard:
  • IEC/EN 61984: connectors. Appliances intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres comply with the following set of standards:
  • IEC/EN 60079

AMERICAN UL/CSA STANDARDS MARECHAL® appliances comply with the following standards, as applicable:

  • UL 1682 (United States) and CSA C22.2 No. 182.1-07 (Canada): plug socket-outlets and connectors
  • UL 2682 (United States): plug socket-outlets with breaking capacity for motor connection

EUROPEAN DIRECTIVE 2014/34/EU

The ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, known as the ‘New Approach’, applies to explosion protection systems and all equipment used in or associated with potentially explosive atmospheres, such as electrical and non-electrical equipment, components and devices for safety, control and adjustment necessary for the safe operation of such equipment, and protection systems. European Directive 2014/34/EU defines the essential health and safety requirements that must be met by all manufacturers. Equipment falling within the scope of the European Directive and meeting the essential health and safety requirements is identified by a label bearing the logo.

EUROPEAN DIRECTIVE 1999/92/EC

Directive 1999/92/EC aims to improve the safety and health protection of workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres. Site managers are required to:

  • Prevent the formation of explosive atmospheres or, if this is not possible, prevent the ignition of explosive atmospheres
  • Assess the specific risks associated with explosive atmospheres and draw up and keep up to date an explosion protection document
  • Classify places where explosive atmospheres may occur into zones
  • Mitigate the harmful effects of an explosion to protect workers’ health and safety (installing the necessary equipment, organisational measures such as staff training, etc.)

IECEx

The IECEx system is a voluntary certification system based on international standards for electrical and non-electrical equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
Its purpose is to facilitate the international movement of equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. (in accordance with one or more international standards defining the type of protection against the risk of explosion), thereby simplifying multiple national certifications and ensuring an appropriate level of safety. The IECEx certification system enables manufacturers of Ex equipment to obtain a certificate of conformity that is recognised by the bodies that are members of this organisation. Some countries, such as Australia, recognise this certification as national conformity.
